CSS 2027 Syllabus — Complete Subject List and Marks Distribution

Planning to appear in CSS 2027? Your first step is understanding the complete CSS 2027 syllabus — not just the subject names, but the marks distribution, paper structure, and how the optional subject group system works. This is the full breakdown as prescribed by FPSC.

CSS 2027 Exam Structure at a Glance

  • Total marks: 1,200
  • Compulsory subjects: 6 papers × 100 marks = 600 marks (all mandatory)
  • Optional subjects: selected from Groups I–VII = 600 marks
  • Passing marks: 40% in each compulsory paper, 33% in each optional paper, 50% aggregate
  • MPT (Mandatory Preliminary Test): must be passed before sitting the written exam

CSS 2027 Compulsory Subjects — All Six Are Mandatory

CSS 2027 Optional Subjects — How the Group System Works

A common misconception is that candidates simply choose 6 optional subjects each worth 100 marks. This is not how the CSS optional system works. Optional subjects are divided into Groups I–VII by FPSC. Some subjects carry 200 marks (two papers) — for example, Political Science I & II, International Relations I & II, and Economics I & II. Others carry 100 marks (one paper). Candidates must select subjects from the groups such that their total optional marks add up to 600.

Practical example: Political Science I & II (200 marks) + International Relations I & II (200 marks) + Public Administration (100 marks) + Sociology (100 marks) = 600 optional marks across six papers.

Most Commonly Chosen CSS Optional Subjects

SubjectMarksWhy Candidates Choose It
Political Science I & II200Heavy overlap with Current Affairs + Pakistan Affairs compulsory papers
International Relations I & II200Overlaps with Current Affairs; suits foreign policy and diplomacy interest
Public Administration100Directly relevant to civil service work; considered a high-scoring subject
Sociology100Broad essay-based syllabus; suits strong writers from any background
History of Pakistan & India100Significant overlap with Pakistan Affairs compulsory paper
Gender Studies100Modern, growing syllabus with good scoring potential
Economics I & II200Very high scoring if background is strong; difficult for non-economists
Constitutional Law100Excellent for law graduates; risky without legal background

What Changed in the CSS Syllabus in Recent Years?

The MPT (Mandatory Preliminary Test) was introduced in 2022 — not as part of the 2016 syllabus revision. It is a separate MCQ-based screening test. The 2016 change was a content syllabus update. The MPT is a structural reform introduced six years later.

Since 2022, all CSS aspirants must first pass the MPT before appearing in the main written exams. The MPT is 200 MCQs covering English, General Abilities, Current Affairs, Pakistan Affairs, and Islamic Studies. Passing threshold: 33% (66 out of 200). Your MPT score does not count toward your final CSS merit.

How to Choose the Right CSS Optional Subjects

Subject selection depends on three things: your academic background, content overlap with compulsory papers, and your writing ability. We have been advising CSS candidates on subject selection since 2002. Come talk to us before you finalise your combination.
